Relationship advice for successfully dating a recovering addict
Marie Hartwell-Walker I Have been dating someone for a little over a month. He has told me a little bit of his past with drinking. He said that he was in an unhappy relationship with someone for over three years and had been drinking, one night he hit rock bottom and slept with someone else. His relationship ended and he decided to get help through AA.
Sex and Dating in Sobriety. By Amy Dresner 01/23/ In the beginning, the boys in AA kept me coming back. I think dating in the rooms of AA is not unlike hooking up in prison. There is a limited supply of broken people and we recycle each other. “You ain’t. You gonna focus on recovery.”.
Hi, So I’m really new to this, and I’ve been talking to this guy for a little over a year now. We finally started to date back on November 7th. Everything was great or so I thought and He was two years sober. I wanted to support him through his recovery, offered to go to meetings with him and whatever he needed for me to do. I went with him to his two year pin ceremony i think that’s what it is called and was really happy to see the look on his face when he received it.
He had a lot of things happen in his life at the same time, promotion at work, childhood pet die, best friend from work die and on top of that, shuffling around from place to place to live until finally he made the decision to get his own apartment. We spent several weekends finding the right apartment for him and he seemed happy. We spent an inordinate amount of time together and enjoyed every moment of it. About two weeks ago, we were out running errands and at the end of the night, he pulls me aside and tells me that he needs to be single for a while.
He tells me that he’s pulled too far away from his AA program and he is afraid that he’s going to relapse.

If you are in recovery yourself or not, you may have had an opportunity to date an addict or alcoholic who is trying to get well. Common wisdom around the rooms of step programs, treatment centers, and sober living houses is to steer clear of the newly sober person, or court disaster and pain for both you and your potential paramour.
Why is this and are there exceptions? Many people suggest waiting until the new person has one year of continuous sobriety before diving in. Other people suggest waiting until they are in the middle of their 9th step in a step program, as that is when many will truly learn how to treat people.
Sep 10, · Dating a Recovering Alcoholic. I have gone a few dates with a guy, a great guy (so far), who’s over a year “sober”. OP, if that’s not you, then you’re probably fine dating an AA in recovery. Like r3 said, dating someone in recovery during his/her first year is probably a bad idea, though some people may take longer.
Gets off on emotional drama and intensity. Co-dependants tell you “You’re emotionally stable, you’re perfect, you’re flawless”, because they’re auditioning for a supporting enabling role in their script. Script Think “sinner lead to redemption by the love of a good woman” motif. Stable perfect flawless girl meets unstable imperfect flawed boy. Every week he lets her down, she saves him.
He says his catch phrase “I’m so weak, so bad, so lost. Really exciting and intense for a while, but it will exhaust you, and may take all your money and energy. These shows get cancelled after the first series because they get formulaic and predictable. The good news is, you will learn unfortunately the hard way just how incredibly viscerally erotically turned on you find relationships with steady reliable dependable hard-working grown up partners, who turn up on time, don’t steal your money, and don’t sleep with your sister.
If you do end up marrying an IT Engineer, who actually loves you, wouldn’t dream of cheating on you, has a good reliable income, and is a great father, your AA man will tease you for the rest of your life.
Am I In An Abusive Relationship?
How long have they been sober? If the answer is less than one year, give them time to get grounded in their recovery before embarking on a romantic relationship. Contrary to widespread misconception, addiction is not a moral failing or a character flaw. Decades of scientific research have shown that addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease, similar in many ways to heart disease or diabetes, which requires lifelong care. As such, recovering addicts need empathy and support.
They may be in recovery when they meet you and maybe after you are dating them and maybe after you are married to them. Don’t count on it lasting. Mine was in recovery when I met him.
Exception to the Rule: Most members are around my age and cool. I was surprised that stylish young folks were sober and part of this secret society. I developed a few passing crushes but never acted on them, dutifully sticking to the suggestion to avoid romantic relationships for the first year. So I was abstinent partly out of fear. After my first sober anniversary, I went on a couple of dates and had a few hook-ups, but nothing caught fire.
I decided to attend 90 meetings in 90 days. But what I really needed was 90 days off my ex. After it dissolved, I decided to attend 90 meetings in 90 days. So I stopped all contact with him and avoided him at meetings. After three months had passed, I felt ready to date again. But I swore off dating in AA. What if I really fell for someone, especially in my home group?
I’m Married But In Love With Someone Else
The gift of freedom requires the acknowledgment of the benefactor, God. To experience freedom without realizing its source is to miss the point; freedom requires responsibility. When I was drinking, I demanded freedom without responsibility and I suffered.

Early in recovery a period of total sexual abstinence is a benefit; without abstinence, recovery is impossible. Some people call this a period of celibacy. Later abstinence will come to mean abstaining from your bottom line behaviors sometimes called inner circle behaviors and boundaries sometimes called middle circle behaviors.
Accept that you are a sex and love addict. Don’t blame yourself for failures, but don’t give in either. There is no room in recovery for guilt and shame, as they perpetuate the shame spiral that often feeds our very addiction. Guilt is when we feel we’ve done something bad. Shame is when we feel that we are bad. Both of these attitudes need to be addressed head-on in recovery.
Even After Recovery The Wounds Remain

Many treatment programs discourage their members (either actively or otherwise) from pursuing romantic or sexual relationships in the aftermath of their recovery. The Fix tells the story of a eight-year-sober year old man who, on the advice of his AA sponsor, “religiously avoided dating” for six months.
Your year-old son is dating a year-old female classmate — no big deal, right? Take, for example, the widely publicized case of Marcus Dwayne Dixon, an year-old high school honor student and star football player who had sex with a year-old female classmate. She claimed it was rape, he claimed it was consensual, and a jury acquitted him of the charges.
However, because of their age difference, the jury still found Dixon guilty of statutory rape and aggravated child molestation, and sentenced him to a mandatory 10 years in prison under Georgia law. He walked out of prison on May 3, , at age 19, a free man. Upon his release from prison, Dixon enrolled at Hampton University in Virginia with a football scholarship.
